I appreciate the suggestion. We've been looking into creating a separate Enterprise/business product that's specifically designed to address these types of issues. I would be happy to discuss by email what you'd like to see in such a product. Contact me at chris@osirisdevelopment.com.

I assume you are referring to the "Floating toolbar" version?

This may be a little tricky because of the way the themes work. Themes have clearly defined states of Full, Discharging, Low, Critical, and Charging. The colors for those states are defined within the theme. Since the colors are actually created by the images in the themes, there would have to be clearly defined states beyond just the low and critical and themes could optionally support.

What I could do is allow for notifications at arbitrary battery levels but without changing the color/state of bar itself.

Currently, holding SHIFT while clicking on BatteryBar allows you to turn on debug logging, but I could do CTRL or ALT. It's a great idea. I find myself wanting to turn of the screen occasionally without putting it to sleep. I'll check it out.

I suppose it's plausible, though I'm not a C/C++ developer, unfortunately. If one of the Rainmeter developers would like to assist, we may be able to work something out.

I agree that it's a good idea, but unfortunately, the battery charge/discharge logic is all handled by the system BIOS. There's no standard API to configure how a battery charges or discharges.

The best that I can do is display a popup box at a certain percentage to remind you to disconnect the power cord.

Battery discharge is controlled by the BIOS. Some laptop manufactures include capabilities in their BIOS so that software can have some influence over the battery charging, but it's vendor specific.

I don't see how Linux could control how the batteries discharge, but if it can, it's likely part of the battery driver in the kernel. Windows doesn't expose any API that allow that level of control.

Personally, I'd love to know if there is a way to do that, since I use dual batteries in my system and I'd love to have the secondary battery only discharge when the primary reaches about 30% or so, but I don't think it's possible.

Themes are part of the Pro version. Go to Preferences -> Display and change the theme to one of the two Windows 7 themes.

I see. It sounds like your asking for the battery profile to storage something like minimum, average, and maximum values rather than just average (as it does right now). It would take some significant reworking of the battery profile portion of the software, but I suppose it could be done. I'll look into it.

Chris ThompsonAdminChris Thompson (Admin, Osiris Development) commented  ·

BatteryBar already does this, though it takes a few minutes to ramp up. As you use your system, the software calculates how long the battery is estimated to last over the last 6 percentage points versus how long it ACTUALLY lasted over the same time. That number is a ratio that is applied to the time remaining estimate.

So, if at 80% your battery averages 2 hours remaining normally, but whatever you're doing is currently discharging the battery at 115% of normal, BatteryBar will show 102 minutes remaining instead of 120 minutes remaining.

I have been thinking about the best way to show that ratio so you can see how fast your battery is discharging compared to your average battery profile.

In the Pro version, the right-click menu already has the ability to show you the current power scheme and allows you to change the current power scheme. In addition, the 3.4.0 beta has an option in Preferences (Pro) to automatically change the power scheme when on battery or on external power.

The idea of adding the current power scheme to the status popup goes along with another suggestion to allow users to customize the information that's displayed in the status popup. If that ever happens, then it would make sense to add that then.

The Pro versions has an enabled to turn off BatteryBar when the battery is fully charged. However, the feature is a bit flaky in that it can't always turn itself back on. I may need to write up a support program to handle that better.

Chris ThompsonAdminChris Thompson (Admin, Osiris Development) commented  ·

You'll have to explain this feature a bit more clearly. The whole point of BatteryBar is to see the battery status at all times without having to find a tiny icon or hover some something to get more details, like the standard Windows icon. I'm not sure what the benefit would be here.

I'm not sure I understand your point. The free version is a simple battery meter. The Pro version adds features for people that want to see things like alerts, themes, and a lot more options that they are will to pay to use. If I move all those features to the free version, there's not going to be incentive for people to upgrade.

Currently if you left-click on BatteryBar it'll toggle from time to percentage (not right-click as mentioned).

I think a better suggestion would be to allow the user to configure what data shows on the bar. Some users have suggested adding the discharge rate. So I could add an option to allow users to choose which of the three items will be shown on the bar when it's clicked, or to disable clicking altogether.

Can you be more specific on how you'd like to display it? I can't imagine showing the name of the current profile, no way it would fit. In XP you can have multiple custom power profiles, so how would you show that? In the Status popup?

I have no idea what you're asking. The width of BatteryBar is already automatically determined by the minimum width needed to display the text.
